Criteria for Graduation

What you do and how you do it in your parish is the ultimate measure of the Reader. With that and James 2:26 in mind (“faith without works is dead”), the criteria for graduation of the Candidate are heavily weighted in favor of what you do.

To Earn the Status of Graduate: The Candidate must:

  • Complete 100% of the Challenges, for example:
    • Eagerly receive instruction and correction from the Seminary team, Priests, and Archbishop/Bishop.
    • Read in such a way that listeners clearly understand what is being read/good enunciation
    • Correctly explain the meaning, relevance, and biblical groundings of icons
    • Correctly explain the significance and relevance of the various aspects of the temple, the relationship of the parts, and the related biblical and historical precedence
    • Communicate –without notes—the purpose and value, grace, relevance, and specific nature of the role of Reader to a teenager in such a way that the teenager can accurately and substantially repeat what he/she has heard in his/her own words
    • Be certified as a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Instructor, Levels I and II
    • Be certified to serve as a Participant-Facilitator in the Freedom Challenge
    • Explain to a lay person the value and the limitations of cultural influences on what the Reader does and on Orthodoxy
    • ...and many more (see, The Challenges)
    • Also, the Candidate will have no more than two unexcused absences in any class within any term and be late no more than two times for any class within any term. (The reason for this apparently “small” requirement is actions speak louder than words to the Orthodox and to those who are seeking (Mt. 25:21, Lk 19:17)).

To Earn the Status of Graduate, With Honors: The Candidate who achieves this will:

  • Complete 100% of the Challenges
  • Earn a grade of at least 80% or better in all classes that require papers and/or written tests.
  • Have no unexcused absences
  • Be on-time or early for all classes and events.

To Earn the Status of Graduate, With Highest Honors: The Candidate who achieves this will:

  • Complete 100% of the Challenges
  • Earn a grade of at least 80% or better in all classes that require papers and/or written tests.
  • Have no unexcused absences
  • Be on-time or early for all classes and events.
  • Be an active and contributing member of a self-selected team of at least three persons who have substantially and demonstrably improved the enthusiasm and/or piety of an Orthodox parish or have been of extraordinary and verifiable service to a community that surrounds an Orthodox church, mission, or school.

Failure: The Candidate who does the following will leave The Reader-Excellence Challenge:

  • Fails to achieve any of the Challenges (with the exceptions of attendance and timeliness, the Candidate is afforded two additional attempts within a one-week period to achieve a Challenge)
  • Accumulates three or more unexcused absences in any class within any term.
  • Is late three or more times for any class within any term.
